eLearning Week 2010 was held in September. The 16th, 17th, and 18th of September 2010 were busy days for many people interested in the concept of eLearning. The conference on distance learning was held in Seoul, South Korea. The name of the event was "Enhancing eLearning in a Smart Way". Both domestic and international experts in the eLearning industry attended the conference. Business workshops were held along with biz matching.
The two keynote speakers were Haeseok Oh, the vice president of Kyungwon University and Roy D. Pea of Stanford University. Mr Pea is the co-author of the 2010 National Education Technology plan. This was written for the US Department of Education. There were dozens of other speakers including Dae Hoon Sung, Won Suck Yoon and Kyong AeNa.
The host organizations were the ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
This gives domestic companies an opportunity to share their business and products with overseas buyers. It is a meeting place for business as well as eLearning.
Just what is eLearning? This is often referred to as distance learning and is a way to bring education to those who cannot attend in person. eLearning has become big business with some people getting their bachelor's degrees and other degrees in this fashion.
There are different types of distance learning. It offers up a whole new learning technique to thousands of people who could not have it any other way. There is eLearning online where you take courses through the aid of the internet. There is eLearning that is done in the classroom with the help of computers and the internet. There is also compressed distance learning that uses an interactive video course to teach.
ELearning is a rapidly growing means for people to complete higher education courses and do it at home or even while at work. With ELearning older people are returning to school to get the further education that they need to improve their careers. In many instances it is a cheaper form of education than what is found with classroom education, yet it is just as good. In some ways it may even be better as people are also familiarized with the computer and the internet. It is believed that nearly 50% of students take some of their classes on the internet while a quarter of all students in higher education take all of their classes on the internet.
The market for ELearning is unbelievable. It is believed that the industry is worth somewhere around 48 billion dollars worldwide. It doesn’t seem all that long ago when it was just an infant idea that had not taken off yet. Some of the reason ELearning is so popular is that fact that it is so easy to access. You do not have to leave your home to further your education if you don't want to, you can work anywhere there is WIFI and a laptop to connect you to the internet and the online school you are working with. Even colleges and universities that hold classes in classrooms are now offering certain courses online as an ELearning experience.
This has opened all new doors for employment as teachers who teach ELearning must have special skills in computers and the internet. The students can benefit because by the end of their courses online they too will have mastered many aspects of the computer and working online. Businesses are even setting up for their workers to take e-classes to move forward in the company. This benefits the workers and the company they work for.
The online courses are as complete as classroom courses and will earn the same number of credits. It is even possible to get a doctorate online now. Is ELearning a good thing? I think so, mainly due to the fact that people who could not normally afford to go to college can now take college courses online. You can even get grants that will help you to pay for the online courses. Since businesses don't seem to care whether you take classes in a class room setting or online at home it could actually be better than the classroom.
Nowadays nearly all schools incorporate ELearning into their curriculum starting in the elementary schools. Computers are a big part of your life now and it only will grow stronger. There is a lot to be learned on the internet and whether your child goes to a regular school or is home schooled you will be able to find many teaching tools online not to mention courses for all ages. Gifted children were the first to experience ELearning but now more schools are implementing it for all students in all grades.
With computers being a part of our lives it is important to start teaching our children how to work them and how it works now, when they are young. It won't be long before you will be asking them how to do something on the computer and on the internet.
ELearning actually got its start in the e1960s by professors Atkinson and Suppes. They started to teach elementary students who were considered gifted on the internet. They taught English and math and both are still used on the internet for children. Now internet learning is a huge success and many people have gotten doctorates just from online schools. It is a school in a way since all they do is teach others lessons and lesson plans.
Some colleges do nothing more than teach online courses and they will offer a doctorate. You will have semesters and lesson plans just like going to a higher learning school. Everything a real world school has an ELearning school will have except maybe a lunch room. In most cases you will be able to work at your own pace. You can go slow or fast. A semester may only last a month or two if you spend a lot of time learning. If you need to take off some time, a day or two you can without any repercussions. So in some ways ELearning is better and it is going to prove to be the wave of the future.
